1. What is Square Register?
Square Register is a complete countertop POS system that combines hardware, payments and Square software in one integrated setup. It includes a touchscreen for your team and a separate customer-facing display, giving businesses a professional checkout experience without needing to piece together multiple devices.
2. What can I do with Square Register?
Square Register lets you accept payments, ring up sales, manage items and inventory, track customers and access Square’s business management tools. Depending on the Square software you choose, you can also manage features designed for restaurants, retail stores, beauty businesses and other industries.
3. Does Square Register have two screens?
Yes. Square Register includes a large touchscreen for your employees and a separate customer-facing display. Customers can see their purchase information and complete payments on their side of the counter while your team manages the transaction from the main display.
4. What types of payments does Square Register accept?
Square Register has built-in support for contactless and EMV chip payments. Customers can tap compatible credit or debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and other supported digital wallets. Magnetic-stripe payments require a separate Square Reader for Magstripe connected to the Register.
5. Does Square Register need an internet connection?
Square Register connects to the internet using Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Square also offers offline payment functionality for temporary internet interruptions. Eligible offline transactions must be uploaded by reconnecting the Register to the internet within Square’s required timeframe, currently within 24 hours.
6. Does Square Register have a built-in receipt printer?
No. Square Register does not have a receipt printer built directly into the system. Businesses that want printed receipts can connect a compatible receipt printer. The accessory hub can also connect additional hardware such as a cash drawer or barcode scanner.
7. Can I connect a barcode scanner and cash drawer?
Yes. Square Register supports compatible business accessories, including barcode scanners, receipt printers and cash drawers. Its accessory hub provides multiple USB connections, while select wireless accessories can connect through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, allowing you to build a countertop setup around the needs of your business.
8. Is Square Register good for restaurants?
Yes. Square Register can work well for quick-service restaurants, full-service restaurants, cafés and other food businesses. Square’s restaurant software can provide tools for order entry, table and course management, bar tabs and other workflows while keeping payments and business management connected through one platform.
9. Is Square Register good for retail stores?
Yes. Square Register gives retailers a professional countertop checkout while connecting sales with inventory and other Square business tools. Retail businesses can use compatible Square software for inventory management, low-stock alerts, customer information and reporting while connecting in-person and online sales.
10. Does Square Register need to stay plugged in?
Yes. Unlike portable Square devices, Square Register is designed as a countertop POS system and must remain connected to a power source while being used. It can connect to your network through Wi-Fi or Ethernet, making it well suited for a permanent checkout station.
11. What is the difference between Square Register and Square Handheld?
Square Register is a countertop POS with separate employee and customer-facing touchscreens. Square Handheld is designed for mobility, allowing employees to take orders and payments throughout the business. Many businesses may prefer Register at the main checkout and Handheld when employees need to move around.
