Square Terminal FAQs
1. What is Square Terminal?
Square Terminal is a compact all-in-one payment device that combines card acceptance, Square POS software and a built-in receipt printer. Businesses can use it at a countertop or carry it to customers for checkout. Its rechargeable battery also allows the Terminal to operate without remaining plugged into a power outlet.
2. What can I do with Square Terminal?
Square Terminal lets you accept payments, ring up sales, issue receipts and use Square’s point-of-sale tools from one compact device. Depending on the Square software your business uses, you can also access features designed for restaurants, retail, beauty, professional services and other types of businesses.
3. What types of payments does Square Terminal accept?
Square Terminal accepts contactless payments, EMV chip cards and magnetic-stripe cards directly from the device. Customers can tap a compatible credit or debit card or supported digital wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, insert a chip card or swipe a magnetic-stripe card.
4. Does Square Terminal have a built-in receipt printer?
Yes. Square Terminal has a receipt printer built directly into the device, so you don’t need a separate printer for basic printed receipts. The printer uses 57 mm-wide thermal receipt paper. Customers can also receive digital receipts when a printed receipt isn’t necessary.
5. Does Square Terminal need Wi-Fi?
Square Terminal can connect to the internet through Wi-Fi. Businesses that prefer a wired connection can also use Ethernet with the optional Hub for Square Terminal. If your internet connection is temporarily interrupted, eligible transactions may also be accepted using Square’s offline payment functionality.
6. Can Square Terminal accept payments without internet?
Yes. Square Terminal supports offline payments when your internet connection is temporarily unavailable. Eligible transactions can be stored and processed after the Terminal reconnects. Square currently requires the device to reconnect to the internet within 24 hours of taking the first offline payment, and additional terms apply.
7. Does Square Terminal need to stay plugged in?
No. Square Terminal includes a rechargeable battery designed to last throughout the day, allowing it to be used cordlessly. You can keep it at a checkout counter or carry it to customers when needed. Actual battery performance can vary depending on device usage, connectivity and other operating conditions.
8. Can I connect accessories to Square Terminal?
Yes. Square Terminal works with compatible business accessories. With the optional Hub for Square Terminal, you can connect Ethernet and up to three USB accessories, such as a cash drawer or barcode scanner. Square also supports a range of compatible third-party hardware for businesses that want to expand their setup.
9. Is Square Terminal good for restaurants?
Yes. Square Terminal can work well for restaurants, cafés and other food businesses that want a compact payment device. Its cordless design allows employees to bring payments closer to customers, while the built-in receipt printer and Square POS software provide useful tools for handling everyday restaurant transactions.
10. Is Square Terminal good for retail businesses?
Yes. Square Terminal can give retail businesses a compact checkout solution without requiring a large countertop POS system. It accepts major payment types, prints receipts and runs Square POS software. Retailers can also connect compatible accessories when they need additional hardware for their particular checkout environment.
11. What is the difference between Square Terminal and Square Handheld?
Square Terminal is designed primarily as a compact payment terminal and includes a built-in receipt printer while still being easy to move around. Square Handheld is smaller and designed around mobility, with a built-in barcode scanner and camera. Both accept contactless and chip payments and run Square POS software.
